Itโs time to tell the truth: tithing is not a New Testament commandment.
You stand in pulpits and preach โBring you all the tithes into the storehouseโ like itโs written to the Church, when in reality, Malachi was addressing the priests of Israel who were robbing God by mishandling the tithes under the Law.
There wasnโt even just one tithe, there were three.
โขA tithe for the Levites (Numbers 18:21โ24)
โขA tithe for the holy feasts (Deuteronomy 14:22โ27)
โขA tithe every third year for the poor (Deuteronomy 14:28โ29)
Thatโs not even 10%, thatโs closer to 23โ30%! And all of it was connected to the Levitical priesthood and the Temple system, which were both fulfilled and done away with in Christ.
So when you quote Malachi 3 and tell people theyโre โcursed with a curseโ for not tithing, youโre preaching Law to those who have been redeemed by Grace.
Galatians 3:13 says, โChrist hath redeemed us from the curse of the law.โ You cannot use the curse of Malachi 3 against those who are in Christ Jesus.
The storehouse in Malachi wasnโt your church building. It was a literal storage room in the Temple for grain and offerings, not a modern bank account or offering plate. Most pastors fail to teach the fact that a majority of tithes were agricultural, not money.
When you threaten Godโs people with curses and guilt for not giving 10%, youโre not preaching faith, youโre preaching fear. Youโre twisting Scripture to control, not to free. Under the New Covenant, giving is led by the Spirit, not the Law.
2 Corinthians 9:7 says, โEvery man according to the purpose in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.โ
Pastors, if you have to manipulate people to fund your ministry, you need to check your calling. Godโs work done Godโs way will never lack Godโs supply.
Stop turning grace into a guilt trip. Stop binding believers under a covenant Christ already fulfilled.
You canโt preach freedom from sin while keeping people in bondage to the Law.
Let me be clear, I absolutely encourage giving to the church because itโs 100% biblical and required by God. Giving 10%, is a great number to start with. Itโs generous, itโs disciplined, and it helps build the Kingdom. But make no mistake: giving 10% is not a requirement from God under the New Covenant. Give because you love Him, not because you fear a curse.
